Executive Order Adds Detail on DMV Operations

Yesterday, GYADA reported key details of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s latest Executive Order that was issued in response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The complete Order has now been published and reviewed by GNYADA. It includes some new important details relevant to dealers, a summary of which follows:

  • All In-Person DMV Appointments Canceled – Until further notice, DMV will only be conducting all transactions using the agency’s online system.

  • Licenses and Registrations Extended – Until further notice, all drivers’ licenses, registration documents and license plates, which expired after March 1, 2020, will remain valid and in effect. This includes temporary registrations issued by an auto dealer.

  • Vehicle Inspections Still Required – The Governor’s Order notably did not address vehicle inspections. As he has already declared repair shops to be essential services, consumers should continue to ensure the safety of their vehicle by bringing their vehicle in for its annual inspection before their sticker expires.

GNYADA will continue to keep you updated as the situation evolves and will alert you when the Governor issues any new Orders or rescinds prior ones.
